Vaccine passports are a conspiracy against freedom

 Turning Britain into a 'papers please' society is a slippery slope that ought to worry us all

For almost the whole of the past twelve months, as we poor, downtrodden ordinary mortals have struggled to hold on to our sanity through months of house arrest and wave after wave of project fear propaganda aimed at scaring us into getting vaccines that may kill us but will not make us immune to a disease which will not kill us unless we are older than Methusala and have more diseases than a medical dictionary. Many of us felt the government we elected to serve us had turned its back on its benefactors and dedicated itself to boosting the profits of the Big Pharma cartel and vaccine makers like Pfizer.  spite of government

Eventually the vaccine roll out began, and in spite of government ludicrous government claims that take up of the vaccine was almost 100%, the public response was a long way short of wildly enthusiastic which is why the government  resorted in turn to even more ridiculous levels of scaremongering, bribery, coercion, peer pressure and finally outright bullying to force the determinedly sceptical to accept the killer vaccine (right now, in July 2021, if you are reasonably fit and have no long term heath problems such as diabetes yor chances of dying from the vaccine are greater than of dying from COVID.

As one of their coercive tactics earlier this year the government had threatened to introduce "vaccine passports", digital documents which we would have to present in order to gain entry to sports stadiums, music venues, theatres and cinemas and even pubs, thus ghettoizing the unvaccinated. This was not the first echo if Aktion T4, the genetic cleansing programme introduced in 1930s Germany during the course of this pandemic.

Half the government took against this illiberal, undemocratic and downright fascistic idea and were at pains to quash rumours that domestic vaccine passports would ever feature in English daily life. Again and again, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi ruled out the introduction of a system he branded “discriminatory”. “That’s not how we do things. We do them by consent,” he said back in February.

Prime Minister Johnson dismissed the idea too too, before inserting the mandate into his risibly named “Freedom Day” address, delivered from his official country residence, Chequers while he was self isolating having been pinged by the NHS' far from infallible Track and Trace app which detected he had been within spitting distance of someone who had had a cold (another coronavirus variant) in the past 20 years or something. From September, double vaccination would be required to enter nightclubs and other “crowded events”. “Proof of a negative test will no longer be enough.” It also proved that his Government’s aims now stretch beyond merely “protecting” the NHS during a pandemic and into the realm of long-term coercive control,  of the entire population in the style made popular by Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Chairman Mao, Fidel Castro and Pol Pot to name but a few.

Those who warned against vaccine passports; whether on grounds of discrimination, ethics or practicality, were repeatedly told not to worry, that the whole thing was a madcap conspiracy theory. Even now, many are convinced the move will never happen – it’s just a bluff to get the young double-vaccinated, copying Emmanuel Macron’s interventions in France.

In order to implement this policy, the Government must know that it would encounter serious resistance from Parliament, plus legal challenges from various libertarian pressure groups. An unholy alliance of far left, extreme right and dead centre pressure groups oppose the idea; Corbynites, Greens, Lib Dems rank and file Tories and most significantly perhaps, Nigel Farage, the most successful political campaigner we have seen in the past 30 years.. There is even a growing faction of Conservative backbench Members of Parliament led by former leader Iain Duncan Smith determined to vote down the plan. These people, the nearest thing we have to an official opposition as Kier Starmer's Labour Party continues trying to pull off the trick of simultaneously sitting on the fence and riding two horses with one arse. The Conservative COVID sceptics have supported the Government so far; but only on the understanding that things like domestic Covid passes wouldn’t happen. So ministers may never follow through on this cynical ultimatum for fear on seing Boris booted out of office by his own party. 

But what an appalling way to run a country; lying to the public, treating them less as rational citizens than credulous lab rats to be “nudged” (or coerced or bulllied) by the biggest pstop the world has ever witnessed, into compliance. It may achieve short-term aims, but at a price: the erosion of trust.

If however, and ministers really intend to push this policy through – and previous examples of governments not so much moving the goalposts as relocating the entire fucking stadium suggest we should take this rush towards fascism seriously because the consequences are unthinkable. For the first time ever in a democracy, we would be granting domestic privileges based on a kind of social credit system; transforming the relationship between individuals and the state to that of slave and owner.  Limp - dicked little losers with tablet computers would have total power over every aspect of our lives. Personal liberty would be a folk memory. Everyday activities like shopping or sitting down to have a coffee with friends would become privileges contingent on a complience with an experimental medical procedure. Free association would no longer be a right or a personal choice, but a government-conferred privilege. It would usher in a “papers please” mentality previously unheard of in peacetime.

No 10 has provided worryingly little detail so far suggesting this is another knee jerk raction by those tinplate tyrants on the government's scientific advisory panel, SAGE, but the PM’s intervention raises big questions. How would such a scheme operate, and where would it end? 

History has shown time and again that having snatched powers during an emergency, governments are reluctant to relinquish them, inded it usually requires blood on the streets before the tyrants get the message. It seems highly unlikely that after assembling a vast surveillance and certification infrastructure at great cost, it will simply be dismantled when the “crisis” is over. More likely it would be used for further data gathering and sharing schemes; perhaps even ID cards, something Britain has always resisted.

What would stop it being extended to other health conditions? Once Covid status is relevant, why not other infectious diseases that kill thousands each year, like flu? Will the state, or whichever firms run the app, be able to track our movements? And if so what would be the fate of those who do not have the app installed on their smartphone or do not even have smartphones.

The existing NHS app already demands personal data with no relevance to users’ vaccination status. How would they protect our privacy, a pertinent question given the NHS’s history of data breaches? Throughout the pandemic, legislation has come into force without debate or parliamentary vote. How quickly this too could become Orwellian, with little proper scrutiny.

It’s a slippery slope. Nightclubs are an easy starting point; young clubbers bopping until dawn will be low priority to most, but once established, the principle will become harder to resist elsewhere. Places of worship, weddings, and busy pubs might not be far behind. Just yesterday Tory minister Paul Scully insisted Covid passes would never be required for pubs, only for No 10 to issue a speedy contradiction, confirming it “hadn’t been ruled out” – so watch this space.

As a low-risk 20-something, I was pleased to get my first jab last month, seeing it as a small (and voluntary) contribution towards herd immunity. But I certainly didn’t do so in order that a small, unvaccinated minority could be excluded from the public sphere or browbeaten into compliance. And to what end? Though vaccines are brilliant at protecting against hospitalisation and death, they are less effective at reducing transmission – hence why some double-vaccinees have since been reinfected. We’d be upending social and public health norms on an illogical premise.

The Government may not be staging some grand conspiracy to turn Britain into a Chinese-style social credit system, zealously monitoring citizens’ behaviour to permit or prohibit basic rights. But sometimes weakness and incompetence can send a country in a similar direction. People may not care about clubs, or the young who frequent them. But they should care about a paradigm shift that undermines all our liberties.

Things have gone so far beyond what can be considered a rational response to an outbreak of a highly contagious but for most people relatively minor illness that I am starting to believe even the conspiracy theories I know I made up myself. Along with my fellow Boggart Bloggers I predicted weeks ago the current outbreak  of the so – called coronavirus would see a massive hyping of the threat level leading up to an assault on our freedoms. And that is exactly what we have seen happening over the past week.

The first move was the cancellation of all sporting events and concerts, followed by the enforced closure of entertainment events and though all public gatherings have not quite been outlawed there is enormous pressure on organisers to cancel. Even the Glastonbury music and counterculture festival has been cancelled “to prevent people being exposed to coronavirus,” which is totally illogical, people who go to Glastonbury are exposed to at least a hundred diseases far worse than coronavirs whenever they use Glastonbury’s infamous toilet facilities.

In the last 48 hours schools have been closed and people urged to work from home. And people like myself who are aged over 70 have been warned that if we don’t place ourselves under house arrest (self – isolate they euphemistically call it,) for four months the ban on our enjoying any social activity may have to be legally enforced. Naturally we, being a generation that has lived through worse crises, have responded “Self – Isolate my arse.”

It’s only going to get worse of course.

The powers that the “Coronavirus Bill” being rushed through parliament will to give the state levels of power over individuals unprecedented outside of wartime. It is the most extensive encroachment on British civil liberties we have ever seen outside of wartime. In the event of the pandemic being as serious as scientists have warned the government will need some of these powers, but when has reality ever come close to the scale of catastrophe scientists warn of. Remember the Swine flu, Bird flu, SARS and MERS epidemics that were going to sweep the world, all occurred since the beginning of the curent century and are all but forgotten now, because the dire warnings, the attempts to stir up mass hysteria and the predictions of doom heralded only minor events with the dead numbered in hundreds rather than millions.

If we were facing anything like the level of threat governments, bureaucracies like The United Nations and the World Health Organisation, and the mass media are suggesting, some of the powers governments are giving themselves might be justified. But here are a few statistics that put the whole thing in perspective:

And here’s a statistic that will put the whole thing into prespective: worldwide, slightly over 4000 people die every day from tuberculosis. There’s no panic about that, nobody is screaming it the end of civilization as we know it, yet in the nine weeks since coronavirus reached Europe less than 5000 have died of corona virus, (a significantly smaller number than have died of seasonal flu in the corresponding period.

Bizarrely we also have our governments in the liberal democracies praising the government of China (where the disease allegedly originated after a genetically modified virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory,) for effectively controlling the epidemic there. Official figures from the Chinese government claim there have been about 80,000 conformed cases and 5,000 deaths to date. But China is a socialist dictatorship run by an authoritarian, tyrannical bureaucracy. Only a fool would believe information released by the Chinese government.

Unofficial reports I’m hearing through my network of business contacts is that the Chinese government is lying through its teeth, the infection is still rampant in China, there have been upwards of 100,000 fatalities and many millions of infections, the stories of hospitals built from scratch being fully operational 30 seconds after work on the foundations is begun (OK, I’m exaggerating for effect, but you know what I mean,) are typical of the bullshit that always comes out of socialist governments to mask the fact that in a crisis bureaucrats (or CHIMPS as they are sometimes known, Completely Hopeless In Most Practical Situations,) never have a clue how to deal with the problems thrown up by a crisis.

The upshot of all this confusing, misleading and downright false information is that it is more more, not less, important to scrutinise what is going on. We must not be seduced by those soothing messages from the authorities that they have everything under control and so long as we obey orders the authorities will protect us. THEY HAVEN’T A FUCKING CLUE.

Many people will not like this process of questioning everything. Just as during a terror attack, they want firm assurances that there is nothing to worry about and everything will soon be back to normal and become irritated with those who ask the difficult questions and reveal that the people who are supposed to be in charge as as ill – informed as. The fact that those in authority do not like being questionedat makes it even more important that we question them and continue to question them. We have a right to be told how being stripped of certain civil liberties will help fight a virus about which little is known.

Yesterday the government published some guidance on what measures its coronavirus bill will introduce. That’s all we have for now, that and the news that the Labour opposition will support the bil in parliament. We’ll will be able to scrutinise the bill properly when the it reaches parliament in a few days time. The Prime Minister’s office expects it to get royal assent by the end of this month (March,). It’s being forced through quickly, for obvious reasons.

If you follow the link above,  the government web site’s text makes for very challenging reading, bureaucratic gobbledegook is never easy, but it gives a sense of how bad the government thinks things could get, or at least wants us to think it thinks things could get. It’s all speculation of course, we have no idea how the disease will spread other that that supplied by “scientists” with their mathematical models. And as we have observed in the case of climate change, mathematical models usually predict the opposite of what really happens. (Anyone remember that hilarious episode a few years ago when a research ship on a mission to study the effects of sea ice melt in Antarctica was stuck for several weeks in ice the mathematical models insisted was not there. And the scientists had no difficulty convincing themselves that the white stuff slowly crushing the hull of their ship was not there, because the methematical modeld said the area was ice free.

Once of the more disturbing clauses in the bill concerns indemnity from legal redress in cases of for clinical negligence cases arising from NHS efforts to deal with the virus. That suggests an awareness of how grim things could become if the health service starts to buckle under the strain.

There will also be provisions for local governments to take over the death management processes in their jurisdiction if the number of deaths becomes too high for private funeral directors to handle. That would involve local authorities managing and streamlining the work of funeral directors, mortuary owners and crematorium owners.

This is not a normal government bill. These are not normal times. But are governments merely taking sensible precautions or is something more sinister going on.

The powers the government will give itself are extraordinary. “The bill will enable the police and immigration officers to detain a person, for a limited period, who is, or may be, infectious and to take them to a suitable place to enable screening and assessment,” the notes read.’

It will also allow temporary judicial commissioners (JCs) to be appointed at the request of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner which taken at face value does not seem bad.  In fact it is the one of the most critical pieces of domestic legislation for national security and individual liberty. It creates the statutory basis for the use of the investigatory powers by the intelligence and law enforcement agencies, using warrants issued under the act. These warrants provide the agencies with the capability they need to protect national security and investigate and prevent serious crime. Fair enough, but it also paves the way for massive expansion of the mass surveillance systems already in place, particularly facial recognition technology. The Home Secretary, again at the request of the Investigatory Powers Commissioner, will also be allowed to vary the time allowed for urgent warrants to be reviewed by a JC and how long they can last before they need to be reviewed. The maximum time allowed for a review will be increased to a maximum of 12 days (up from the current 3 days). So goodbye Habeas Corpus and probably the presumption of innocence and the right to trial by jury with it.

Maintaining national security capabilities at a time of potential widespread upheaval is critical and it is necessary to ensure that the powers to vary specific aspects of the regime are available to the government should they be deemed necessary, for example if there are fewer JCs available than usual.

The Panopticon - Total Surveillance Society

Ever had that feeling you are being watched, unseen eyes are monitoring your every move, recording your every action, even knowing what you think. We live in a surveillance society but few really understand how intrusive the activiries of the watchers are. Welcome to the Panopticon. Enlightenment philosopher Jeremy Bentham's ideal prison has become a metaphor for the world we have created. We are told electronic surveillance and tracking are necessary for our security but we all know that's bollocks, don't we?

We live in a surveillance society. We are watched every day by cameras in our towns and along main roads, details of our financial transactions and social interactions via the internet are saved to databases and analyzed by software to build a picture of our lifestyle, habits, preferences and peccadillos which will be available to those willing to pay. The government through its obsession with form filling and a matrix of cross indexed references knows everything about our health, career progress, what car we drives, whether we have ever been late paying out taxes.

The Panopticon can be reinterpreted as a world envisaged by many writers, George Orwell in his novel 1984, written in 1948 predicted not only a totalitarian government obsessed with power and control but an agency called The Thought Police whose function was to identify people whose minds might be straying "off - message", by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World and by the post-modern philosopher Michel Foucault in his book “Discipline and Punish” which introduced to fiction the idea of The Watchers, borrowed perhaps from a middle eastern text of the early Biblical era, The Book of Enoch. (Enoch : The Watchers). Enoch, though thought to be the earliest text of the people we now call Hebrews, is not part of The Old Testament. Although not included in the modern Bible, Enoch is referred to in Ezekiel, Jude and several other Biblical books and very obviously had a great influence on The Apocalypse of St. John the Divine (aka Revelations). Clearly however, the worlds envisioned by those books is made possible by modern technology.

Foucault’s image of the Panopticon reflected his belief that our modern social order is based on our love of technical rationality. The Panopticon embodies the modern love of surveillance and control. The Panopticon is a system (not necessarily a tower as is often imagined, think of it as a metaphorical tower although it may well be a subterranean computer centre. Its purpose was to keep the subject under continual observation and thus through the unarticulated threat of sanction would pressure subject into a regime of strict self discipline.

The Panopticon, was first conceived and designed by the English philosopher and social reformer Jeremy Bentham in 1791. Bentham was founder of the Utilitarian movement in philosophy, his ideas being built around the goal of achieving "the greatest good of the greatest number." He described his idea of The Panopticon as the “ideal” prison for modern times. It consisted of a central observation tower with an encircling building containing prison cells. The observers in the tower could see everybody in the cells all of the time, but the people in the cells could not see the observers, who were hidden from sight in the tower, which was darkened.

Jeremy Bentham, founder of utilitarian philosophy, designed The Panoptiocon

"Morals reformed - health preserved - industry invigorated, instruction diffused - public burthens lightened - Economy seated, as it were, upon a rock - the gordian knot of the Poor-Laws are not cut, but untied - all by a simple idea in Architecture!" the thinker proclaimed. "A building circular... The prisoners in their cells, occupying the circumference—The officers in the centre. By blinds and other contrivances, the Inspectors concealed... from the observation of the prisoners: hence the sentiment of a sort of omnipresence—The whole circuit reviewable with little, or... without any, change of place. One station in the inspection part affording the most perfect view of every cell." (from: Proposal for a New and Less Expensive mode of Employing and Reforming Convicts (Jeremy Bentham, London, 1798)

Jeremy Bentham's ideas on how the greatest greatest good of the greatest number principle might be achieved were not always thoroughly thought through. In common with many moral and social philosophers, his ideas looked great on paper but in practical terms were unworkable. Bentham spent much of his time and fortune on designs for the Panopticon. The Panopticon ("all-seeing") was a prison (but might be thought of in terms of a dystopian society like those depicted in Orwell's 1984, Franz Kafka's The Trial, Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, Terry Gilliam's film Brazil or Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. The idea was to allow constant and total surveillance of the inmates by their supervisors. Bentham's intention was humanitarian; but the penal system was perhaps not the best place to start putting his utilitarian philosophies into practice.

The greatest happiness principle, if we take Bentham's ideas to their conclusion, dictates the construction, not of prisons, but the secular equivalent of Heaven-on-Earth. When harnassed to biotechnology, this utopian-sounding vision is feasible - albeit implausible. Yet the ideological obstacles to global happiness may prove greater than the practical challenges: the contemporary utilitarian project needs more visually compelling symbols than an image of discipline and punishment. On utilitarian grounds, the Panopticon is perhaps best forgotten.

Foucault felt Bentham's Panopticon captured not the highest ideal of the Utilitarian movement but the essence of the modern age: the powerless are exposed to the relentless gaze of the powerful. The powerless are coerced to internalize and act in accordance with the standards and expectations of the powerful, without the powerful actually have to touch or come in contact with the powerless (forget all the high minded windbaggery of lefties, the elite might talk of fairness and equality but truly despise the masses). Furthermore, at any given moment the powerless people do not actually know whether or not they are being actively watched and so can never let down their guard. They must must always act in accordance with the expectations of the powerful. In other words, vigilance supplants torture. The powerful don’t have to touch you nor be seen by you in order to exert their power over you.

In government propaganda, in education, news media, most mainstream literature, films, television we are taught to admire and trust this particular small group of elite people, since only they are noble enough, selfless enough, intelligent enough to “save” us from our ignorance and stupidity. It is the blueprint for domination followed by every fascistic regime since ancient Egypt, Babylon and Sumeria. Understanding of how it works throws light on much of the apparent insanity going on today. Ironically the Utilitarians, along with romantics, Chartists, existentialists and other social and philosophical movements of the era known as "The Enlightenment" fought for and won for the masses the right to education.

Suddenly, about half way through the twentieth century, the elites found that the educated proletariat were asking a lot of difficult questions and no longer placed a childlike trust in elitists to ensure that "all is for the best in this, the best of all possible worlds." (More on that in a later article) The outcome of allowing the masses to escape from the darkness threatened the superiority of the elites. Their response was dumbing down in education, the promotion of a shallow, materialistic cultures and the development of huge industries dedicated to manipulating the minds of ordinary people.
